Bribery in Islam

Question:

I am an engineer in government department. On every file, every engineer of this department receives some commission only to sign it. The whole department is involved in this issue; I alone can’t stop this system. Is commission halal or haram in Islam or it is kind of bribery, what is the command of Islam in this regard? May I take this commission? Will it be considered bribery in Islam? Please answer in detail.

Answer:

Due to government job, the amount of salary has, surely, been fixed for every person of that department. Owing to fixed salary, this type of commission comes under the definition of bribe and taking bribe is haram in Islam and it has been counted among major sins in Islamic Shari’ah. There is no place for bribery in Islam, It is necessary to keep away from bribery. If there is no way except receiving this bribe then it should be given to the poor and needy people without intention of Thawab (favour of Allah).

Allah knows the best
